James Comey Says He Regrets Describing Trump As An Orange Clown In His New Book

The paragraph in discussion:

“His face appeared slightly orange with bright white half-moons under his eyes where I assumed he placed small tanning goggles, and impressively coifed, bright blond hair, which upon close inspection looked to be all his…..As he extended his hand, I made a mental note to check its size. It was smaller than mine, but did not seem unusually so.”

There are a couple things going on with this Comey situation.

One — He’s losing his gusto as a deeply respected former director of the FBI. He’s portraying himself more as petty and butthurt pundit than he is a reserved, private, strong force in America’s intelligence and security community. His writings on Trump’s appearance led to that, as do comments like this.

“Living my best life” … James Comey an Instagram model now? Come on dude.

Two — He’s cashing in. He’s selling books. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that but it does come with a cost and the cost here is that Comey’s sacrificing what I mentioned above. I don’t mind it. Wet your beak, Jim. Comey’s been a public servant for basically ever. Those government salaries may come with some nice benefits but they don’t buy Nantucket houses (which may later be split with others). So Jim’s gotta get his. Gotta strike while the iron’s hot. Comey’s got a fascinating and lucrative story to tell and now’s the time to tell it.

People can hate on his pettiness, and they are. People can claim it’s damaging his reputation, which it is. But you’re kind of missing the point in doing so — Comey’s committed to selling books and you sell books by including juicy blurbs about Trump’s ridiculous appearance. The inclusion of that paragraph and today’s comments about regretting said inclusion create more and more headlines that churn up more and more hype. Show biz 101.

Nobody’s rehiring Comey for FBI Director anytime soon, but he’s printing money as we speak. Go Jim go.
